Our story

In a way, mme moe came from an Olympic experience. Paul Williams, mme moe's inventor, is an Olympian. He represented Australia in water polo and went on to coach others to do the same. The experience exposed Paul to coaching, learning and development at a performance level few of us have experienced.

Paul went on to build a career in education and as a coach and technology entrepreneur. Not surprisingly, his specialty has been to develop teachers and principals through proven coaching models - models Paul has implemented, not just studied.

As Paul's career developed, Web technologies continued to improve and online professional development technologies began to appear on the market. Paul and others noticed that most of these technologies were designed for top-down HR performance management, case management or managing approvals for attendance at PD events, not for reflective practice or the other habits of effective professionals. It appeared that the paper-based surveys and annual performance reviews of old were now being entered into Web interfaces and stored on databases. Not much had changed beyond automation. Alongside this, teachers were being sent to expensive 'one size fits all' PD sessions. For all the technology, most teachers are still evaluated once a year, surveys are compared, and training is often dispensed to the group, not tailored to the individual. Anyone in education knows about the issues of professional development, especially the Return on Investment issue.

In recent years, there as been a shift to Professional Learning (PL) and Professional Learning Networks (PLNs). Under this model, teachers are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, beginning with teachers developing the habit of reflective practice. Paul became excited by this shift as it aligned to long-established coaching models. Paul saw that a Web technology could be developed to support and drive professional reflection and the wider coaching model. That's where the idea for mme moe came from. The ascendancy of PL is reflected in the explosion of education conferences, workshops, Twitter #edchats and other social media forums. While PLN traffic on social media is enormous, it only figures in the week-to-week lives of a very small percentage of teachers and an even smaller percentage of principals, education directors and superintendents. mme moe was developed, in part, to support PL as a mainstream school activity.

From November 2013 through to January 2015, Paul joined forces with Mark Lamont to take the mme moe concept from a storyboard to working prototype, road tested with school systems in the US, Australia and UK. By October 2015, mme moe was incorporated as a company, the software fully operational with customers, companion training and courses, revenue and a global distribution network.

mme moe is receiving very favourable feedback and uptake, globally. By 2016, our customers included some of the largest school systems, universities and global development agencies in the world - and small medium-size customers. Read some of our customer case studies.

Paul Williams
Paul is Chief Learning Officer, mme moe inventor and co-founder at mme moe Pty Ltd. Paul has served as an olympian, teacher and principal, and as a district manager for the Western Australian Department of Education.

Paul entered the commercial world with a product he designed in 2001 called Kidmap. He has since worked with or for Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Mercator Software, VIPtone and Oracle, and as a high performance coach at the Western Australian Institute of Sport. This also includes significant time spent as a professional learning consultant to teachers in a range of contexts. Throughout all aspects of his career, Paul has constantly been interested in and learning about how people get better at what they do. The culmination of that expertise, experience and research is mme moe.

Paul still lectures in professional practice and learning technologies at Curtin University. He manages students on professional practice all over Australia. He is completing a PhD concerning “pre-service teachers’ perceptions of agency over their learning, comparing command/control unit based systems and self-organised learning environments”.

Paul’s current work with high performing athletes at Western Australia Institute of Sport (WAIS) concerns both the technical aspects of skill development and developing and promoting a champion mindset. Paul has researched the competencies of champion athletes, and this research, along with many years’ experience training principals and teachers, has flowed through to the ‘habits of effective people’ basis on which key aspects of mme moe are based. Follow Paul on Twitter @mmemoe or email Paul.
